Flood Insurance Bill Signed Into Law
Earlier today President Obama signed the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act (HR 3370) into law.  This is great news and we should hopefully start seeing some relief from Biggert Waters very soon.  Here are some quick differences with the new law:

–   Eliminates the sales trigger, which means those purchasing new homes will not see automatic increases to full risk rate and they are     allowed to assume policies.
–   Restores grandfathering, allowing those who initially built to code to continue paying their current rate even after map changes.
–   Properties not paying actuarial rates will see an annual increase of at least 5% but no greater than 18% until reaching actuarial rate (25% for non-primary and business properties)
–   Properties not paying actuarial rates will also have an annual surcharge of $25 for primary residences and $250 for non-primary and business properties.

For more information on the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act, or to schedule to have one of NOMAR's Governmental Affairs Directors come to your office to discuss the new law and the impact it may have on real estate, please contact Senior Governmental Affairs Director Kelli Walker at (504) 885-3200 or at This email address is being protected from spambots. 2014 WATER CHALLENGE DAY - Monday, March 24th
Louisiana is a water state.  Nearly every meausure of our worth or description of who we are is connected to water.  Water is big business, and flows through virtually every aspect of the global economy.  If we look at water through an entrepreneurial lens we see myriad opportunities to transform Louisiana into a globally influential water leader.  To achieve this we need a statewide culture of innovation, in which every citizen is water-aware and able to connect their energy and ideas to systems that accelerate their passion for taking-on our water challenges.

For the past four years, the Greater New Orleans Foundation and The Idea Village have led an effort to spark the transformation of Louisiana into a global water power by sponsoring and producing the Water Challenge entrepreneurial competition.  This exciting program discovers and nurtures water entrepreneurs, highlights opportunities, and attracts international attention to our many water issues and assets.  It is a day to learn from and network with internationally recognized water leaders, to discover and build new collaborations, and to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of our resourceful Louisiana citizens.

We hope you can join us at this year's GNOF/Idea Village Water Challenge Day on Monday, March 24th at Gallier Hall during New Orleans Entrepreneur Week when we shine a light on innovation in Louisiana.  Although online registration is closed, you can register on-site.  The day starts with a focus on the rapidly growing financial systems supporting water innovation, so arrive early to allow time for walk-in registration.
